Chanel Hosted Metiers d’Art Runway Show in Tokyo

Chanel is the latest brand to host a special runway show in Asia.

The French fashion house reprised its Metiers d'Art runway show on Wednesday on the fifth floor of the Toranomon Hills complex, a skyscraper located near Tokyo's Shimbashi business district that will open to the public next week and house offices, residences, restaurants and a hotel.

Chanel staged not one but two runway shows yesterday afternoon and evening (Karl Lagerfeld was unfortunately not in attendance) and invited top clients and local fashion editors to attend in an attempt to capitalize on the brand's "booming" business in Japan, Bruno Pavlovsky, the president of fashion at Chanel, told WWD.

"Japan has always been a key market for Chanel ... our customers are still very loyal [to] the brand," Pavlovsky told the trade publication.

President of Chanel Japan, Richard Collasse, said Chanel's collections of fashion, accessories and cosmetics have been a huge hit with Japanese consumers, who seem to be optimistic about the country's economy. Collasse told WWD that he thinks this positive business trend is one that will continue into the future.

"Last year was one of the best years we've ever had at Chanel in Japan, and this year is probably going to be even better," Collasse said.

"We were a bit worried after the consumer tax increase in April that our most expensive product, the ready-to-wear, would suffer a little bit because you know our prices are pretty high. Actually we had a very positive increase in April because the collection is wonderful."

Despite Chanel's popularity in Asia, Pavlovsky said there aren't any plans to expand in the area with additional retail locations at the moment. But the brand is working to improve customer service at existing stores in the area, as well as differentiating its current shops to give its customers a unique experience at every location.
